There are quite a number of tracks spread around the country, but the one of most interest to Icknield members is at Gosling Park, Welwyn Garden City. This is an open air track and training sessions are held there on Monday evenings during the summer, with a racing league on Friday evenings. They also have open meetings on some weekends during the summer. Typically on a Friday night you would ride 4 events out of a choice of Points Race, Devil, Block Pursuit, Block Handicap and Scratch Race. Sometimes Individual and Team Pursuits are run. Juveniles have their own events, whilst ladies ride some ladies’ events and some of the men’s events. The seniors, ladies and juniors are split into two groups, the A league and the B league, according to their ability and results. Track bikes can be hired at Gosling Park for a few quid. Remember, if you want to improve your speed, whether in time trialling, road racing or mountain biking, track racing is probably about the best form of training possible.
